Meet our 2018 Chair: Wendy Fisher

In 2015, my husband and I were elated to find out we were not only expecting, Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, beardbut expecting twin boys! At 23 weeks, I was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia and HELLP.   Sadly, our only option to save my life was to deliver our boys, even though they were not big enough to survive. We delivered two angels on October 29, 2015. If we hadn't known what symptoms to look out for, I could have been lost as well. That is why educating women on the symptoms to watch for is so important, and research to find a cure for this horrible disease is critical. This past July, we had our beautiful rainbow baby girl!  I am honored to serve as the chair of this amazing event and I am looking forward to working with the foundation and the wonderful group of volunteers that make this event such a success and get us one step closer to finding a cure!

Meet our 2018 Committee:

After suffering through nearly fatal complications following her second pregnancy, Lisa became involved with the Preeclampsia Foundation. As an OB nurse, she sees families affected by preeclampsia every day. She is excited to be closely involved in a cause she is so passionate about, and raise awareness and funds for research.

At this check-up I learned I had preeclampsia and prior to that moment I had NO IDEA what preeclampsia even was and the life threatening risks it causes for both women and babies. I am thrilled to be a part of this committee to help raise awareness for women and future mom's to be.

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, indoorLisa Smith:  Lisa is the Marketing and Communications Committee member. Lisa Smith is excited to be involved in the Promise Walk this year for the first time! Her career has centered around non-profit event planning and now that she is a stay at home mom, she is happy to give back to a cause that affects so many. Lisa was diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension towards the end of her pregnancy in 2017 and was induced with concerns of preeclampsia developing. She is so thankful to have a healthy baby boy with her husband Josh and looks forward to working with the committee to help raise funds and awareness to create a cure for preeclampsia.

Our Mission Family:

 The Melitas Family
I had a low birthweight due to my mother’s pre-eclampsia and I was born at 26 weeks. After a miscarriage in 2016, my husband Nick and I prayed for this next pregnancy to last longer than 12 weeks. I hoped for a full-term pregnancy and celebrated once we hit the 26 week mark! I still had the pamphlet of signs and symptoms from Pre-Eclampsia Foundation that I picked up from a March of Dimes walk a few years ago. End of September the baby had intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). At 28 weeks 6 days I noticed facial swelling under my eyes and measured my blood pressure (140/95 then later in afternoon 168/107 with horrible headache) at my workplace- family practice physician office. If I didn’t know that swelling under my eyes was not normal, I would not have known to check my blood pressure that day. Florida Hospital Orlando was most equipped to treat the situation. Highest the blood pressure hit was 187/111. I was diagnosed of having Pre-Eclampsia with severe features (proteinuria, severe headache and high blood pressure). We tried to keep baby in until 34 weeks gestation. Blood pressure and horrible headaches were able to be stabilized with medication until 29 weeks 4 days, when our tiny baby girl Elaine was born October 9th 2017 by emergency c-section due to fetal heart rate deceleration from contractions in response from being induced for vaginal birth. My husband and I are honored to be the mission family for 2018! We want all potential mothers and fathers to be aware of the symptoms to save women and babies. We are so thankful I knew what to look out for. We hope today brings us one step closer for our girl to not have to experience what we went through.
